My sweetie Robert of Canterbury was put on vigil and made a Companion of the Pelican this past weekend. I'll try to write it up anon, but I'm visiting w/ friends in Polderslot, and can't really linger on the keyboard. However, I will mention that if you're in southern ID around Sat 27 Nov, you're welcome to attend the Thamesreach revel, where I hope we'll be have a 'post-vigil' and you can come and give Robert your wise and hard-won advice. More details TBA. Current Mood: really proud

barbara_hambly @ 02:26 pm: Chilly afternoon
Washing towels, making soup... going through the monumental fiddly hassle of adjusting my PayPal account to receive payments FROM THE NEW SECTION OF THE WEBSITE THAT IS OPENING SOON!!! Cold sunlight, hot tea, warm cats. And, I realize belatedly, it's my eleventh wedding anniversary. Happy Anniversary, George. The Further Adventures Of... should be up and running soon, thanks to the efforts of my wonderful sitemistress. "Firemaggot," the Antryg and Joanna story (is 15,000 words a novelette?), is my opener, backed with the two short Ben January stories "Libre" and "There Shall Your Heart Be Also," and with "Quest For Glory," which is short and silly and fun. I wrote a little intro (for the benefit of those who HAVEN'T been following all this here on the blog)... and we'll see. In addition to a button to buy stories (at $5 a pop), there will also be a Donate button... all contributions will be accepted with sobs of grateful ecstacy. Hiking with Larry Niven on my one-day vacation from teaching - VERY nice to get out, though I find I'm not nearly as sure-footed as once I was, and have to watch my step where the trail gets steep. Still, the overcast day was balmy and it was marvelous to be out on the hills. And the day following that, a gathering of the college History Department in the local pub, always instructive and enjoyable, though MAN any alcoholic establishment gets noisy once work lets out! Maybe it's the effect of everyone drinking Actual Beer and me drinking Orc-Ale or Thunderbrew or whatever it is they serve in all the taverns of Ironforge... virtual beer that's about as real as the icon one clicks to get the little blue bubbles around one's virtual head. By the way, if anyone is interested in such things I AM on Twitter now... I suppose I should get it connected to this blog (is that possible? It is on my niece's). Current Music: kitty purring
cvirtue @ 04:06 pm: Adjusted for inflation, but not for population
Should've known that Wikipedia would have this, although I wish they also had the same list adjusted for "percent of the population that saw the film." That's the real figure to indicate popularity, but I don't think anyone has tracked that. Film list (adjusted for inflation) [Top grossing in North America] 1. Gone with the Wind (1939) 202,044,600 2. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) 178,119,600 3. The Sound of Music (1965) 142,415,400 4. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) 141,854,300 5. cvirtue @ 03:51 pm: Harry Potter & the Adjective Noun
I finally got around to reading (and finishing) the final Harry Potter book this week. Not a bad story, but could have been a much better one if its volume had been reduced by half. Tags: books
November 13th, 2009aztecknight @ 05:33 pm: Crystal Ball

unshelved_comic @ 07:11 pm: Reviews: BEA 2009: Scott Westerfeld Booktalks Leviathan
http://www.unshelved.com/blog.aspx?post=1536 I was lucky enough to score a signed copy of Leviathan at BEA back in May. Bill immediately seized it so that he and his son (8) could read it together, but I've finally got it back and my daughter (7) and I are really enjoying it. (Yes, we know our kids aren't technically young adults yet, but the book is that good.)
If you haven't heard about Scott Westerfeld's amazing steampunk novel yet, if you haven't picked it up, don't take our word for it, watch Scott's pitch:

cvirtue @ 10:25 am: Personal economies and salary negotiations
This thought-experiment/poll brought to you by I Don't Want To Do My Housework, Inc. At the end of 2008, financial malfeasance on the part of the owner of the company Jane worked for was discovered. As a result, the company went into a death spiral and the expected 10% raise in January turned into a 10% pay cut. Now it's November and the company is still hanging on, but Jane is looking for a new job. Poll #1484862 Economics
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 27 How much should Jane ask for if she is offered a new job (ideally)? What should she settle for as her new salary? Note: Name is pulled out of a hat. Tags: civics, lj-poll

saraidh @ 09:01 am: Update conglomerate
 - I'm still rather pleased about how well our personal gifts to TE Jara went over. It's always good to have friends who appreciate handwovens, and friends who are good sports. - On Tuesday, Prince Tom presented Ilya with an Aquila (GOA level award for combat archery and siege craft). So now he is now both Excellent and Honorable. Hurrah! He's still wandering around saying things like "I have an Aquila!" and "Man, I've really got to do more shooting". I find this highly entertaining. - Work is crazy. News at 11. (I don't know why that phrase is automatically arranged for eastern TV schedules in my head, but it sounds wrong when I try to tweak it.) - I am deeply grateful that nobody took me up on my offer to remotely attend India meetings, which would've required temporarily switching to an overnight schedule. Given all the other chaos in the last month, doing that would've hurt. - I'm heading back to Denver again next week, this time on the New Giant Project 'o Doom, which caoilfhionn has dubbed "Dufflepud". - I can tell I've been on the original GPOD for rather a long time, because I found myself pleased that we're going to be in Denver because then I can talk to Pam (key coworker on both projects) about Dufflepud in the evenings - only to remember that the whole reason we're going is for Dufflepud. - When coworkers greet each other as "Hey honey", it's usually safe to assume they know one another. - It's really annoying trying to run an international meeting when your computer has decided not to talk to your keyboard, or vice versa. - Ilya and I are on the verge of entering the modern communications world. I've decided I need a cell phone with lots more PDA style functions (access to work email being key, plus things like a GPS for navigating unfamiliar cities), and Ilya's just decided he wants a phone and maybe some music features. So we spent last evening looking at options, only to be thwarted by ordering issues. But hopefully I'll manage to go back and get us on that road today or tomorrow. I'll update with phone numbers when we have them. - Thanks for mia_mcdavid for the reminder - This weekend is Fiber Fair! Current Mood: busy

bdeb @ 09:26 am: furlough friday.
So far I have taken Kim to work, played dress up and read and wrote with Grace, and taken a shower. Julie's appointment was cancelled because of the storm so I am reviewing my list to figure out what I have to do. My parents are coming over later in the day to play with Grace. New Sword. - this has to be done today. I am not enthused. Re-tape short sword. - Done. Pack fighting clothes, tent, chairs, clothes. Polish armour. - Done! Strap left elbow. - Done! Sew patch on gambeson. - Skipping this since both holes _should_ be covered by armour now. Make Vambrace. - all done except the waxing. I have to get a new cheap pot to melt the wax in and a cheap brush. The dollar store wasn't open yet earlier this morning. Spear: drill hole, nail on head. I also need to drill a hole in the shaft and the head and put a cut nail through it and clinch it off. Super Secret Project: - DONE! HAHA! Current Music: Super Why!

knappenp @ 08:14 am: Manos! The hands of fate!
Last night we went home and relaxed, then I ran out to get food. While Laura ate and watched some tv, I tried to fix the registry error on my computer and failed. (I think I know what to do next, it's just time-consuming and a little stupid - I got most of the way through the fix, and then it bombed on me.) I retreated upstairs to dinner and we watched some tv, eventually putting in Mystery Science Theater 3000: "Manos" The Hands Of Fate. Laura's never seen any MST3K, so it was new for her; I've never seen Manos but have seen a number of other episodes. We got a little ways in, then went to bed. Tonight we're going to try to go to bed early. Tomorrow is the Tournament of Chivalry, which wants a nice, early start. And Sunday we'll rest. And now I get coffee.
strangerface @ 08:59 am:
penmage sent me this article about the Stephenie Meyer comic book. I'm totally going to throw "Batman" into all my boring LJ entries from now on.
